Filming is due to conclude imminently, but here’s arguably your best look at Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey as iconic duo Joel and Ellie from HBO’s The Last of Us TV show. We’ve seen photos of both actors on set before – and even an official still, courtesy of Naughty Dog – but this image finally evokes some real feels.
Here we go:
There’s no release date attached to HBO’s The Last of Us yet, but it threatens to be one of the biggest TV events of 2023. Sony seems well prepared, as there are rumours Naughty Dog’s applying the finishing touches to a remake of the original game – with a release date reportedly imminent. Hopefully we get to see more of the show soon, as filming finally comes to a conclusion.

I am so incredibly excited for this. Pedro will be a perfect Joel!
Woah, they’re wearing normal clothes just like the game! I can’t believe how incredibly accurate to the game those outfits are, even cosplayers can’t get that right.
I just can't see Pedro as Joel. Only one I can see Joel as is Hugh Jackman after seeing Logan.
Pedro Pascal needs a beard merkin
Joel should have been played by Nikolaj-Coster Waldau
I’m stoked for this show. The casting doesn’t bother me at all. I’m excited to see what extra content they add to the show.
It’s just that Joel is a Caucasian American and doesn’t even have a hint of Hispanic.. like how they recast Hermoine for the Harry Potter play smh
@WolfyTn the significance of Joel's race to the story is completely irrelevant, so it doesn't matter.
@WolfyTn
Pedro Pascal does a very good Texan accent. He pulled it off amazingly in both Narcos and Kingsman 2. I honestly believed that’s why they picked Pascal. Matthew McConaughey has the best Texan accent (makes sense he’s Texan) but his body build doesn’t match Joel’s. Pascal can do the accent and also matches Joel’s physical build.
The fact that he is Hispanic means nothing. He has the accent and he has the body type. That is what matters.
I will say that he should have grown a thick beard for the role. Seeing a clean shaven (or 5 o clock shadow) Joel escorting Ellie is gonna be weird.
i hope this is based near the time setting of the game late 80s early 90s. i miss that time heavy metal through to grunge. maybe why i like days gone that much to lol it was close to that time before things got mad in that game.
im gona go in expecting nothing in this hopfully be good.
@Mad001 uh, hate to break it to you Nad001, but that's not when the games are set. The outbreak happened in 2013, with the bulk of Last of Us Part 1 taking place twenty years later.
There's plenty of remnants of 2010s technology (cars, TVs, computers, and of course Ellie's PS 3 in Part 2) to back this up.
@nessisonett
I know it's sarcasm, but my first thought was "Ellie's clothes are too loose and don't fit!"
It's like they went to the cheapest store around corner and bought the size that fitted her the most. Oh well
Ellie looks about 30!
@WolfyTn LMAO I didn't know that, that's ridiculous lol.
That's like casting Norman Reedus as Blade or Tom Holland as Muhammad Ali
@Nepp67 Well... that just means you're seeing Joel as Logan. Joel isn't Logan. I'm sure Pedro will be superb as Joel.
@ApostateMageThe actress just turned 18 lol. That's what an apocalypse will do do your skins!
@Mad001 I'm genuinely interested what you remembered about the game that made you think it was set in the 80s/90s.
@WolfyTn Strange point to bring up when neither Joel, nor Hermione's race have any bearing on their characters story whatsoever.
@BoldAndBrash no it isn’t. Blade’s race is central to the character, and Ali isn’t a fictional character. Also Rowling herself had said that she’s never explicitly referred to as white in the books.
@TheIdleCritic Stop, all I said was that I thought Hugh Jackman would be fitting cause when I saw his character Logan being much more older I saw him looking similar to Joel. Maybe Pedro will do well though, I guess I'm just basing it off looks too much.
@Jayphex I'm afraid there is a passage in which she does state that Hermione is white. Something about her cheeks turning red. I don't remember exactly. But switching races never bothered me unless it's central to the story (and I can't remember the last time it was).
@BoldAndBrash "It's like they went to the cheapest store around corner and bought the size that fitted her the most. Oh well"
Was looking for some negativity. Wasn't disappointed.
The nerve they have dressing her with loose clothes when she's running for her life. What were they thinking?
"LMAO I didn't know that, that's ridiculous lol.
That's like casting Norman Reedus as Blade or Tom Holland as Muhammad Ali"
Yeah, not even close. And if you don't get that, you need some education on racism.
@nbnmare noway! i blame my meds 😅 nads 😂🤣
@TheIdleCritic meds!? 🤦😂
@TeapotBuddha Rock on!
@TeapotBuddha I did the same thing 😂
@WolfyTn I don't get why Hermione's race was such a big issue.
The only time I get annoyed is when an historical figure is recast as the wrong race, be it a white actor as someone that shouldn't be and visa vie. The only one that didn't annoy me as much was The Green Knight being Dev Patel, as he's very much mythological.
Joel's race doesn't actually play a part in the story, so it's a bit of a non-sequitor. I think these two will do well as Ellie and Joel. We should worry more about who will play older Ellie if this is an success.
@SolaceCreed @TeapotBuddha I did exactly the same. Had some cool pics of Ellie that totally looked like grunge album covers.
The Last of Us Remake is coming out on September 2.
@naruball
You were looking for negativity. That's exactly what you'll get.
I'm hyped as hell for this game and always mention so on this site. It's one of my favourites, have hundreds if not thousands of hours in factions.
I only mentioned the clothing and you lose your sht? The clothing in the game actually fit. Weird that they didn't do that here, but is that the end of the world or are you assuming so?
Just like how you're assuming the latter is racism while Ali is one of my favourite human beings ever. Mindboggling how utterly ridiculous you're being
You get what you look for. If you were actually self aware you'd see how hypocritical you are, but oh well. Suit yourself
@Jayphex
Fair and fair. Didn't know either were true
@BoldAndBrash
Blade and Muhammed Ali's race is very relevant though. Joels race has no bearing on the story whatsover. That and Pedro is about as white looking as i believe you can get as a full blooded hispanic man so uhh...who cares?
@WolfyTn Hispanic isn't a race. You can be 100% European by blood and be Hispanic and you can be 100% indigenous (Native American) and be Hispanic.
